Epic Universe powers Universal boom as Comcast eyes global expansion

Universal Orlando Resort is experiencing unprecedented growth following the May 2025 opening of Epic Universe, with the fourth gate driving increased attendance and guest spending across the entire property. Comcast reported that Universal's Parks segment achieved $1.2 billion in quarterly EBITDA for Q1 2026, marking the second consecutive quarter above the $1 billion threshold.
Epic Universe has transformed Universal Orlando into a multi-day destination, with average guest stays extending from 2.1 days in 2024 to 3.4 days in early 2026. The park's five themed lands, including Super Nintendo World and the Dark Universe area, have drawn visitors who previously split time between Universal and Walt Disney World properties.

Hotel occupancy rates across Universal Orlando reached 94% in Q1 2026, compared to 78% in Q1 2025. The resort added 2,000 hotel rooms through the Helios Grand Hotel at Epic Universe and expanded capacity at existing properties. Average daily rates increased 20% year-over-year, reflecting higher demand for Universal's on-site accommodations.
The success has prompted Comcast to accelerate international expansion plans. CEO Brian Roberts announced during the April 2026 earnings call that the company is evaluating three potential locations for new Universal theme parks outside the United States. Sources within the company indicate discussions are underway for projects in the United Kingdom, Germany, and South Korea.

Universal's domestic parks division reported $8.4 billion in revenue for 2025, representing 28% growth over 2024 figures. Epic Universe contributed $1.8 billion to that total despite operating for only eight months of the year. Food and beverage spending per guest increased 35% system-wide, driven by Epic Universe's premium dining offerings and themed restaurants.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter areas at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida saw renewed interest following Epic Universe's opening. Attendance at Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade increased 15% in Q4 2025 as guests extended their stays to experience all Universal properties during single visits.
Comcast invested $6.5 billion in Epic Universe's development over seven years, making it the most expensive theme park ever constructed. The investment included advanced ride systems, immersive themed environments, and infrastructure to support projected attendance of 12-15 million annual visitors.

Universal Creative is already developing concepts for Epic Universe's expansion, with plans to add a sixth themed land by 2028. The proposed area would focus on DreamWorks Animation properties, featuring attractions based on How to Train Your Dragon and Shrek franchises.
International competitors have taken notice of Universal's success. Disney announced plans to accelerate development of new attractions at Walt Disney World, while SeaWorld Entertainment revealed a $1 billion expansion program for its Orlando property through 2027.
Universal Orlando now ranks as the second-most visited theme park destination in the United States, behind only Walt Disney World Resort. Industry analysts project the gap will narrow further as Epic Universe reaches full operational capacity and Comcast continues investing in new attractions and experiences.
The success positions Universal as a major player in global theme park expansion, with Epic Universe serving as a proof of concept for future international projects. Comcast executives expect to announce specific locations for new Universal parks by the end of 2026.
