Massive Epic Universe Area Removed Overnight as 90s-Era Attractions Return to Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando quietly closed its Epic Universe Preview Center at CityWalk this week, marking the end of a promotional space that served as the primary marketing hub for the company's third gate since June 2024. The Preview Center occupied prime real estate in CityWalk and featured interactive displays, merchandise, and immersive previews designed to build anticipation for Epic Universe's May 2025 opening.
The closure comes nearly one year after Epic Universe opened to the public, suggesting Universal no longer needs dedicated promotional space for a park that has established its own visitor base. Epic Universe features five themed lands, including the Ministry of Magic, which expanded Universal's Harry Potter offerings beyond the existing Wizarding World locations at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida.

In place of the Preview Center, Universal has reinstated the Legacy Store, a retail location that previously operated in the same CityWalk space before being displaced by Epic Universe marketing efforts. The Legacy Store historically sold merchandise from classic Universal attractions, including items from shuttered experiences that held nostalgic value for longtime visitors.
The transition represents a shift in Universal's CityWalk strategy from promotional space to traditional retail operations. CityWalk serves as the entertainment district connecting Universal's resort hotels to its theme parks, making retail locations particularly valuable for capturing visitor spending outside of park admission.

Universal's decision mirrors similar transitions at other major theme park companies, where temporary promotional spaces typically close once new attractions or parks achieve operational stability. Disney employed similar strategies with preview centers for attractions like Avatar Flight of Passage and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, closing promotional spaces after opening day crowds stabilized.
The Preview Center's closure also coincides with Universal's broader expansion of Harry Potter experiences across its Orlando resort. With the Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe now operational alongside Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida, visitors can experience three distinct Wizarding World locations across Universal's three-park complex.

Industry analysts note that closing promotional spaces typically indicates confidence in a new attraction's ability to draw visitors without dedicated marketing presence. Epic Universe's attendance figures have not been publicly released, but Universal CEO Brian Roberts stated during NBCUniversal's Q4 2025 earnings call that the park was "exceeding internal projections for guest satisfaction and repeat visitation."
The Legacy Store's return also addresses longtime Universal fans who expressed disappointment when the retail location closed in 2024. The store traditionally carried merchandise from attractions dating back to Universal's 1990 opening, including items from defunct experiences like Jaws, Back to the Future: The Ride, and the original King Kong Encounter.

Universal has not announced specific merchandise plans for the reopened Legacy Store, but previous iterations featured apparel, collectibles, and souvenirs from attractions spanning the resort's 36-year operating history. The store's return suggests Universal recognizes value in catering to nostalgia-driven visitors alongside its focus on new experiences like Epic Universe.
The Preview Center's 22-month run represents one of Universal's longest-operating promotional spaces, outlasting similar marketing efforts for individual attractions within existing parks. Its closure marks the final phase of Epic Universe's transition from anticipated future addition to established theme park destination within Universal Orlando Resort.
